Hurricane insurance claim advice that will get you started in the right direction.
Hurricane, Wind and Storm Damage
First and foremost, call Insurance Service Associates to assist you with your claim during this stressful period. We will ease the burden of dealing with your Insurance carrier and ensure that you receive everything that you will be entitled to under your policy provisions.
If you can, begin making temporary repairs to prevent further damage if possible. Remember to save all receipts.
Do not attempt to make permanent repairs on your home until an adjuster has inspected it.
Most homeowner policies provide for removal of trees or branches that have fallen on your home. They usually don't pay for removal of trees or debris that blew into your yard without damaging anything.
If your home is uninhabitable or you move somewhere else temporarily, be sure to let your insurer know where you can be reached.
Don't assume that adjusters will know what street they are on; street signs may have blown away. Industry officials say the spray-painting of important information on homes after a hurricane has proved effective. Your name and correct address should be sufficient for an adjuster to find your policy. Don't include your policy number; someone else may take advantage of that.
Insurers usually send adjusters to the worst-hit homes first. If your home sustained only minor damage, be patient.
What about Flood vs. Hurricane Damage?
It's wind vs. water in many a hurricane insurance claim, so be sure you know the difference - and obtain both hurricane and flood insurance when protecting your home.
After the past hurricanes, many residents thought they bought hurricane insurance as part of their home-owner policy, which excludes damage from floods.
While a typical Florida homeowner’s policy covers wind damage, it only covers water damage that is a direct result of rain entering through a wind-damaged area.
Depending on the policy, it will also cover resulting fire or vandalism, debris removal and repairs, and cash or replacement value of damaged property. Additional living expenses (ALE) may also be provided should it become necessary for you to stay at a hotel if your home becomes uninhabitable or not able to be live in.
Florida Insurance adjusters are specially trained to tell the difference between flood and hurricane damage. However, since qualifications vary among insurance professionals, you might find yourself protesting the claim if you think it has been wrongfully determined by an inexperienced adjuster. This is why it is important to have a Public Adjuster from Insurance Service Associates on your side. We will make sure that you get everything that you’re entitled to under your policy provisions.
